South Kensington - Region Background and Development

Before the mid-19th century, the South Kensington area was largely undeveloped, just an agricultural area that supplied fruit and vegetables to London. However, following a major exhibition in Hyde Park in 1851, the Society of Exhibition Directors purchased the 87-acre (352,000 m²) area around what is now Exhibition Road to create an academic precinct for the arts and sciences institutions, thereby providing space for the museum and Imperial College A foundation for development has been established. Landowners around South Kensington began developing their land in the 1860s as a result of new roads being built and a boom in development around London. Later, the government connected South Kensington directly to the main London Underground line in 1868, as well as to the political, commercial and financial centers of Westminster, London's West End and the City of London.

South Kensington also has its own song "Sunny South Kensington", which mainly tells the story of South Kensington as a fashionable area of London in the 1960s.
